In May 2004, Le Grande Bleu received its first international attention as the home base for Roman Abramovich during Chelsea Football Club’s attempt to beat AS Monaco in the UEFA Champions League.
Le Grand Bleu was originally owned by John McCaw Jr., an American businessman and brother of Craig McCaw, the founder of McCaw Cellular and Clearwire.

Mega Yacht Le Grand Bleu by Bremer VulkanIn 2002, Le Grande Bleu was sold to a Russian billionaire and the owner of Chelsea Football Club Roman Abramovich, who had her lengthened and refitted by HDW in Kiel. This also included an internal refit and the addition of a 16ft swim platform. In 2006, Roman Abramovich presented Le Grand Bleu as a gift to old friend Eugene Shvidler, an asset-management and one-time oil Russian billionaire who became an American citizen and is the present owner of the vessel. The interior of Le Grande Bleu has been designed by Terence Disdale.

In 2008, under the ownership of Eugene Shvidler, Le Grande Bleu was again refitted in Jackson, Florida. Le Grande Bleu’s redesign includes a greener wastewater treatment system as well as Lloyd’s certified system, which allows the mega yacht to reuse waste water after treatment rather than discharging waste water into the sea.

Though there is not much information provided about the interiors of the yacht, due to security reasons, a few things about the yacht’s equipments are know. Le Grand Bleu has a 74-foot sailboat and a 67-foot speedboat stored on her aft deck. She also features sufficient room for a helicopter and has a crew of 50.
Weighing 5500 gross tons in weight, Le Grand Bleu is powered by two 3,600-hp Wärtsilä engines which provide the yacht with a cruising speed of 15 knots and a maximum speed of 17 knots. The yacht has a steel hull, a beam of 17.68 meter and a draft of 4.60 meter.
